Would, could and should

Stops your requests sounding like orders. One small word makes you polite, careful and hypothetical.

zou is the Dutch 'would'. It has only two forms: ik / jij / hij / zij / u zou, and wij / jullie / zij zouden.

zou takes seat two. The main action goes to the very end, in its dictionary form. Same pattern as moeten and willen.

It does four everyday jobs: asking politely, giving advice, wishing, and imagining.

  • Zou u wat langzamer kunnen praten?

Could you speak a bit more slowly?

asking: zou … kunnen = could you

  • Zou je de deur even dicht willen doen?

Would you mind closing the door?

asking: zou … willen = would you mind

  • Ik zou graag een afspraak willen maken.

I'd like to make an appointment.

asking: zou graag … willen = I'd like

I'd take the train, not the car.

    advice: what I would do

You should talk to your GP.

advice: zou … moeten = should

  • Ik zou graag aan zee wonen.

I'd love to live by the sea.

    a wish

  • Ik zou wel een week vakantie willen.

    I wouldn't mind a week's holiday.

a wish: zou wel … willen

  1. 1Start with Zou u (formal) or Zou je (casual).
  2. 2Add who or what it is about: mij, dat, het formulier.
  3. 3Add even if you like. It makes it softer still.
  4. 4End with kunnen + the action: Zou u mij even kunnen helpen?

The fourth job is imagining: what would happen if… Dutch builds it like English. The als part goes into the past. The other part gets zou.

als + past tense, comma, then zou + the dictionary form at the end.

If I had more time, I'd exercise more often.

had = past. zou … sporten.

  • Als ik jou was, zou ik bellen.

If I were you, I'd call.

    the classic piece of advice

If it were cheaper, we'd buy a car.

    wij → zouden

If I spoke better Dutch, I'd find work more easily.

sprak = past. zou … vinden.

What would you do if you won the lottery?

the als part can also come second

I'd love to, but I don't have time.

zou … doen, then back to normal

✗Zou u kunnen mij helpen?

✓Zou u mij kunnen helpen?

Both verbs wait at the end. mij comes before them.

The als part is chunk one, so zou comes straight after the comma. Verb, comma, verb.

Imagining, not planning? Put the als part in the past: had, not heb.
