De of het · 3 min

de or het — and why you can mostly stop worrying

There is no reliable rule. Here's what actually helps, plus the 20% that is predictable.

Roughly 75% of Dutch nouns take de and 25% take het. Native speakers learn them one by one, and so will you. Learn every new noun WITH its article — never learn 'kantoor', learn 'het kantoor'.

All plurals are de. Every single one. That's a free win.

The predictable het words: all diminutives (anything ending in -je), most words for languages, metals, sports, compass directions, and words starting with ge-, be-, ver- that came from verbs.

  • het biertje

    the beer (small)

    -je → always het

  • het Nederlands

    Dutch (the language)

  • het gebouw

    the building

    ge- noun

  • de gebouwen

    the buildings

    plural → de

watch out

Getting it wrong marks you as a learner but never blocks understanding. Ship the sentence. Fix the article over time.
